The “Food As Fuel” Mindset: Questions To Ask When You’re Exploring How You Fuel Up

You’ve probably heard it a million times “Food is Fuel”. Today we’re taking that idea in a different direction. We’re going to dive into how your mindset about the role of food in your life can help you find the balance you’re craving. Whether you believe the “Food is Fuel” mantra or not, bringing awareness to how you think about food can fuel can be a truly transformative process.

We’ll help you gain greater awareness by asking some valuable questions. All you need to do is bring your honesty, your non-judgment, and your self--compassion to the table. The result? You’ll have a better idea of where you’ve got your mindset on lock and where you might need to find greater balance.

And of course, we’d love to help you fuel all the goodness in your life with our Wave of Balance products. If you’re working on your “Food As Fuel” mindset and need a boost to get you going, check out our Moringa product line here.

In the meantime, let’s get to those mindset questions!

How Often Do You Drink Water? What Are You Drinking Instead?

When you think about water you probably think about the ol’ 8 glasses a day thing. Or maybe you’re a “lemon water first thing in the morning” person. You may even have an app on your phone or in your daily planner to track your water intake.

But if you’re feeling sluggish, getting fuzzy-headed throughout the day, or just “fall off the wagon” pretty regularly when it comes to water consumption, you might be exposing your body to states of dehydration that can really impact your body and mind.

When you bring awareness to how you get your water each day (Carrying a reusable bottle with you, tracking it on your phone, checking in with yourself each day to see how you did, having an accountability buddy, etc.) you’re way less likely to feel the symptoms of dehydration. You’ll feel fueled and you’ll get your “to do’s” and “want to’s” done.

Do You Get Your Fruits and Veggies In?

Okay, so we might sound like your parents or guardians here but… seriously! We’re all for a treat-your-self moment. But how often do you give your body the sweetness of a fruit or the natural nutrition of a vegetable?
One tip here is to track your fruits and veggies for a week. Don’t change anything before you start tracking. Just start logging your fruits and veggies somewhere (Ex: in your planner or on your phone’s note app.)

When you’ve tracked 7 days, take a look at them. Do you see any patterns? What fruits and veggies do you go for? Are there any you’d like to try?
Now track the next 7 days making any “try it” or “add it” changes.
Compare those lists and see how you feel once you’ve made the changes. The results are probably pretty awesome and it all started with that simple act of bringing awareness to what you’re eating.

Where Do You Get Your Protein Power?

Protein in your diet can help repair, strengthen, and grow your muscles. It’s a big part of fueling your daily activities and workouts too. But sometimes we overlook where we’re getting our daily protein from so let’s work on giving some attention to this vital part of our meals.

For this one, try exploring the different sources of protein in your diet. If you’re a meat-eater this can be things like lean meats and poultry.

And if you live on a vegetable-based diet, check out things like seitan, beans, quinoa, tofu, lentils, and even mushrooms. (By the way, if you’re looking for AMAZING mushrooms check out our friends over at 2 River Mushroom Company for the best Certified Organic gourmet mushrooms around!)

Bringing awareness to where you get your protein from for your daily meals may be as simple as listing your breakfasts or dinners for the week. Exploring what you’re fueling yourself with when it comes to the two big meals of the day can help you to ensure that you’re not missing out on the sustaining power of protein.

Where Are Your Carbs At? How do you feel about them?

Carbs are good! Carbs are bad! Moralizing food choices is not where the fun is at for the team here at Wave of Balance. Instead, we like to look at how the different parts of our diet help us function. Carbs are no different. They fuel our muscles, we burn them during workouts and during our daily lives. When we eat things like whole-grain pasta, rice, and vegetables we’re getting our carbs and fueling our bodies. Simple as that.

Asking yourself how you feel about carbs and where you get the majority of your carbs from on a regular basis can be a great start. You might also want to explore how your body feels when you’re eating certain carbohydrate-rich foods.

How Do You Fill In The Gaps On Your Plate?

When you’ve been exploring and bringing awareness to what your eating for your daily or weekly meals you might notice some empty spots in your diet, empty holes in your nutrition, and places where your plate is less than full with the things that really do fuel you.

One way to fill in those gaps is meal planning. And no, it’s not just for athletes. Busy people and families use meal prep to keep themselves fueled and full.  When you plan and prep your meals, whether it be for the day or for the week, you bring awareness to what you’re eating and you ensure that you have fewer gaps in your diet too!

Another way to fill in those nutritional gaps in your diet is with Wave of Balance moringa products. Vitamin, antioxidant, and nutrient-rich, our products can help fill in the spaces where you need to find your healthy balance and it’s a simple addition to your diet that you can use every day.
